FareShare

First established in 1994- FareShare was co-founded by homeless charity, Crisis and UK retailer Sainsbury’s.

Opening their first warehouse in London, FareShare now has over 24 Regional Centres across the UK, constituting of over 30 individual warehouses where surplus food is picked, packed and transported to frontline charities and community groups across the country.

With a network of over 11,000 charities who receive food from Fareshare, they are the largest UK redistribution charity in the UK, working with other charity partners including The Felix Project, SOFEA and Cyrenians to help provide over 2 million meals per week to people facing food poverty.

Food Poverty in the UK

Food insecurity in the UK is a reality for over 8 million people in the UK who struggle to afford food.

According to Wrap, the equivalent of 1.3bn meals of good-to-eat surplus food in wasted every year and FareShare aims to tackle these issues by working with their food partners to identify quality surplus food within the supply chain and and redistribute it to their network of frontline charities and community groups, who turn this food into meals to support vulnerable people.

Their network of charities include homeless shelters, women’s refuges and hospices, who not only supply food services and parcels, but also care services that help support vulnerable people with other concerns, such as housing and financial struggles or establishments such as school breakfast clubs and after-school groups.

Currently, FareShare are providing over 2 million meals to frontline charities every week, with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic meaning demand for support increased almost overnight.
