KP Snacks: Innovating for consumer health and taste

30 August 2023

In 2023, KP Snacks launched its ‘People & Planet’ programme, setting tough new targets for the way the company does business as it seeks to drive positive change for people and the environment. The programme is structured around four pillars: Consumer, Environment, Social and Employee.

Topics

‘Consumer’ encompasses wide-ranging product innovations and reformulation plus projects to actively encourage healthier lifestyles. KP has committed to increase growth in the proportion of KP products that are (at least) a source of protein or fibre at a faster rate than the rest of its portfolio and to achieve at least 55% of sales from non-HFSS products (or 100 kcals or less per pack) by 2030. KP Snacks has updated its salt reduction targets to achieve a further 10% reduction in salt across its portfolio (from a 2021 baseline). The company aims to create over one million opportunities for consumers to get more active by 2033, and for 2023 is supporting community cricket for the third year through its partnership with The Hundred and Everyone In campaign.

In 2022, progression towards these targets continued with reformulations and new products focused on reduced salt, sugar and/or fat content. This included new Tyrrells Lightly Sea Salted; reformulation for the popchips range; reformulation of the entire Hula Hoops Puft range in Beef, Salt and Salt & Vinegar flavours (now all under 75 calories a pack) and Penn State pretzels in Sour Cream & Chive and Roasted Chilli flavours.

Nuts are naturally high in fibre and a good source of protein and in 2022 KP introduced more accessible formats to help people enjoy more nuts on the go, such as KP Nuts 30g Snack Packs and new KP Nut-tastic – three roasted nut ‘powerhouse’ mixes full of protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals in grazing packs of 200kcal or less, including cashews and crunchy almonds.
