This webinar presents and explores strategies and technical solutions for the decarbonisation of buildings and their associated energy systems. This covers alignment to the new UK Net Zero Buildings Standard, and what this means in terms of requirements for disclosure and delivery against this.
The topic also covers embodied carbon and life-cycle assessment and analysis, use of modelling tools to compare and identify the most cost-effective retrofit options across heating, cooling and power systems. Illustrated examples will be provided to highlight ‘best in class’ new building and retrofit buildings projects.

Austen Bates- Head of Sustainability
Austen Bates is Head of Sustainability within Building Services at Ramboll UK. With over 22 years’ experience he has led and delivered built environment projects that range from strategic region-wide consultancy to award-winning low energy buildings; Austen is passionate about sustainability and how the built environment plays a pivotal role in our low carbon future.
Austen has worked with many of the UK’s prominent developers and cultural institutions to support them in their transformation towards a more sustainable and resilient future in setting sustainability strategy and providing oversight in delivery of their ESG, Net Zero Carbon, Circular Economy, and Biodiversity agendas. Austen actively supports and shapes industry best practice through initiatives with organisations such as WBCSD, UKGBC and BSRIA, and authored the industry leading report with the WBCSD on the business case for circular economy.
James Thomson- Head of Digital Innovation
James is head of Digital Innovation within Building Services at Ramboll UK. With over 10 years' experience in providing creative solutions to bespoke project challenges. He acts as a knowledge expert in the development of digitally enabled workflows and innovative solutions.
He supports the UK building services team in defining their digital innovation offering and has informed on the strategy to incubate the necessary skills to best serve our clients into the future. James has a wealth of experience in delivering digitally enabled solutions on projects, particularly with comparative parametric design principles, evolutionarily solving, traditional programming, and data science techniques. These techniques have been applied at building level, site, city and portfolio level, giving client unique insight into the data needed to make strategic decisions.
