In 2023 Premier Foods developed and launched into market 29 new products by recipe which were classified as either a source of fibre, high in fibre or which delivered a source of fibre per portion. Collectively, this contributed 44.3 tonnes of fibre to the UK diet within the 2023 calendar year.
One such example of fibre innovation was the launch of a new product range, under the Paxo brand, of Potato Rosti Mixes. Two flavour variants were developed – Red Onion & Herb and Mixed Vegetables – with both made to a vegan recipe, and classifying as non-HFSS (high in fat, sugar and salt) according to the Department of Health’s Nutrient Profiling Model.
Both variants provide a claimable source of fibre to the diet based on a 100-calorie serving, with the Red Onion & Herb variant delivering 2.3g of fibre per 100g, and the Mixed Vegetables variant delivering 2.6g of fibre per 100g.
The key challenge this innovation presented was in ensuring the Rosti Mixes delivered the same sensory characteristics of existing Paxo ranges much loved by consumers, including taste, smell and look. It’s a challenge Premier Foods successfully overcame.
